Each year, dozens of bad bills pass the progressive-led legislature that - as written - do not necessarily apply to Home Rule Counties (Weld and Pitkin) and Home Rule City/Counties (Denver and Broomfield). By opting-out of those laws in a written charter, and as a Home Rule County, we can instead adopt regulations and policies that better reflect the values and priorities of our residents while limiting the one-size fits all laws from Denver. And we will have the freedom to govern ourselves.
Additionally, by becoming a Home Rule County (vs. remaining a Statutory County), Douglas County would have greater standing when it comes to challenging those bad laws that shouldn’t apply to us.
Like: Collective bargaining, sanctuary policies, soft on crime legislation, business over-regulation, land use issues, high density zoning requirements, property tax authority, ridiculous fees for service, and needless regulations on our HOA’s.
Plus, we can guarantee a Senior Property Tax Exemption for our residents.
We can keep everything the same when it comes to our elected officials and their duties while still keeping limits on their authority.
And we can streamline government services while having authority over the salaries of elected officials.
Plus, we can lower our Property Taxes.
We can give our Sheriff greater ability to fight crime while also providing our courts more control over sentencing.
Plus, we can coordinate with other agencies.
We can write into our charter provisions to limit the authority of the state when it comes to regulating our businesses and mandating useless service fees.
Plus, we can eliminate the Business Personal Property Tax and Grocery Bag Fee.
